The United Arab Emirates was formed after the withdrawal of British troops from the gulf in 1971.
After the ending of the old treaties between the United Kingdom and the Trucial States, six of the states, Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujeira, Sharjah and Umm al Qiwain, formed an independent Union on December 2, 1971.
The seventh state, Ras al Khaima, joined on February 11, 1972.
Each emirate continued to use their own stamps until a unified currency was created.
A Union Postal Administration was created on August 1, 1972 and the first actual set of stamps issued by the United Arab Emirates on January 1, 1973.
Only two sets of stamps were printed by the Format Printers for the UAE.
