Chad stamps printed by Format International Security Printers Ltd.

The Format Printers produced quite a few sets of stamps for this country. As with many of the African countries imperforate and deluxe sheetlet varieties were produced for just about every stamp issue from 1959 onward. Standard practices under orders from the philatelic agents was to produce them in limited numbers. Usually imperforate sets ranged around 5,000 sets. The deluxe sheetlets ranged from 1,000 sets to 3,000 sets depending on popularity of the subject.

There are conflicts between 1970 and 1973 on which stamps were actually made postally available. At that time there were three different postal agents signed into contracts to produce stamps for Chad. One was The Middle East Stamp Company and another was Martin Sellinger. The third eludes me at this point. As with the Trucial States the two mentioned companies were in constant turmoil over the contracts. The Middle East Stamp Company always trying to say that the Sellinger contracts were invalid. President Tombalbaye had signed to one of them while other officials were signed with others. In June 1973 the president declared some sets were not recognized by Chad but that they might be put on sale at a later date. In July 1973 it was announced they would be placed on sale by the end of the year. No evidence that it actually happened has come forth. It appears that Stanley Gibbons does not list many sets of that time whereas Scott Catalog does.

The problems that arose between 1970 and 1973 show us again the dark and competitive side of philatelic agents. The same thing was happening at the same time with the Trucial States and other countries. Various philatelic agencies claiming they had contracts and trying to run each other out by overproducing numerous issues to gain status in the catalogs. We can see now that most of the philatelic agents did not remain in control namely because of competitive greed of which most ended up with tarnished reputations.

I wish to note the similarities to stamps of the Trucial States (Ajman, Fujiera, etc.) for these earlier sets for Chad.

Chad was invaded by Libya during 1980 to the end of 1981. Although these stamps were made by the Format Printers the overprints and surcharges were most likely done internally.


These were the last stamps printed by the Format International Security Printers Ltd. for Chad. Printing companies like Impressor and Courvoisier took over production of stamps for Chad in 1982. Massive production of varieties continued and gold foil stamps were introduced. It slowed in the 90's due to drops in collector interest.
